When it comes to caring for aging parents, you have a lot of things to consider. Your parents may not want to be forthcoming about their concerns or challenges because they wish to remain free and independent. Sometimes they may not be able to express themselves as to the trouble they are experiencing with their own health and well-being, they may be embarrassed or ashamed about a particular situation and might try to keep the issue concealed.

In other instances, your aging parents might try to ignore a problem hoping it goes away on its own but, in reality, it could only be growing worse and more frequent with every passing day. Unfortunately, these hardships could be placing one or both parents at considerable risk, one that could be significant or even lead to a tragic outcome.

You or your parents may not want to face the prospect of moving them into a home but that time may be coming soon if it’s not here already. This is always a difficult thing to face but there are many good facilities for elderly care in Fort Lauderdale and they are much better equipped at ensuring that your parents get the care they need.

If you are trying to come to terms with this new phase in yours and their lives or you aren’t fully sure whether or not a home is the right choice, consider these reasons that may signal moving them into a home is the right choice.

Condition of Their Current Home

While many seniors are not always forthcoming about any difficulties they may be experiencing, a tell-tale sign that something is not right is the way the home looks. Even though an elderly parent has lived in the same residence for much of their life, that home can soon become a very dangerous place.

So, check the home to see how well it’s being maintained. Is it exponentially dirty or unkempt? Are there things that are being left to neglect that weren’t before? You should also be concerned about any damage that might be evident, especially in the kitchen or the laundry room. These rooms in particular could put your parents and their home in grave danger.

Decreased Mobility

If your parent is having trouble moving from one place to the next unassisted, this could be a sign of trouble that could lead to a serious trip and fall accident. It could be something small or there may be larger problems that need to be addressed.

Memory Loss

Repeated patterns of confusion or forgetfulness may be a sign of bigger issues ahead. If your parents are having difficulty remembering how to get around the neighborhood or even the interior of the home, trouble remembering names of family and friends, or simply misplacing items from house keys to medications, these could all be indications that your parent is suffering the onset of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

As a result, it may be time to get your elderly adult the care and attention he or she needs round the clock.
